Using Adapter & Putting Mac to sleep to display only connected Display:
If you're in mirror mode that will be the case, just because your laptop is 16:10 in terms of screen/resolution ratio whereas the TV is 16:9 (and you're outputting whatever resolution your MacBook/MBP is 1280x800 or 1440x900). If you switch to extended desktop mode you should have a fullscreen fill, but your dock/menubar will be on your main screen still.

If you use clamshell mode, you should be able to get everything on the TV and it'll scale properly. To get it into claim shell mode, using an external keyboard and mouse put the MacBook to sleep and hook up or turn on the external display. • How do you adjust the display settings on a Mac?
You may need to adjust the display settings on the Mac before you can see any picture on the tv.

    Try the following:
1.) Go into the System Settings
2.) Go into the Display Settings
3.) On one of the Tabs in the Display Settings Window there will be a button on the lower right hand corner that says “Detect Displays”. Click on it.
4.) On one of the other tabs in the Display Settings Window will be a list of different resolutions, such as 1920x1080. Try them all until you find one that works, it can vary from setup to setup depending on the devices.

  • How do you change your display settings in Windows?
To select different display settings at any time, open Display Settings in Control Panel.
Open Display Settings by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Display Settings.
Choose the appearance of additional displays
After you connect an additional monitor, you can use the New Display Detected dialog box to indicate how you want you’re desktop to appear on the monitor's display.
You can choose to mirror, or duplicate, your desktop on all displays. A mirrored desktop—the default display option—is useful if you plan to use your mobile PC to give a presentation on a projector or a fixed display in a conference room, such as a wallmounted plasma display or TVtype monitor. When you want to increase your desktop area, you can extend your desktop across all displays, so that you can move program windows back
and forth between the different displays. For example, you can use Microsoft Office OneNote to take notes on your mobile PC while presenting information to colleagues on an external display that everyone can see.
You can also show your desktop only on the external display. This option is useful when you play a DVD on a mobile PC that supports fullscreen video playback on a single display. You can also save battery power by turning off the mobile PC display and using only the external display.
